Turning a Box with a Fitted Lid
with Richard Raffan
Learn techniques of end-grain turning
On the lathe, turning a box with a loose-fitting lid is no big deal, but making one with a suction-fit lid is a demanding test of skill -- and very satisfying when pulled off well!
The trick is in getting perfectly mating surfaces in the lid and base flange. They should be tight enough to make a slight air seal, but loose enough to come apart without rubbing or binding.
In this video, master turner Richard Raffan shows how to sneak up on the perfect fit. He also demonstrates almost every technique useful in end-grain turning: truing with skews, profiling with gouges, hollowing with scrapers, using calipers; also making a jam-fit chuck and fixing a split on the lathe.
