About residential off-grid systems

A basic off-grid system consists of a renewable energy source, which generates DC power, a battery bank that stores the DC power, and an inverter. This inverter (made by Xantrex) is the center of a renewable energy system, converting DC power into clean and reliable AC electricity for you and your family's needs.

The off-grid system pictured here is a solar-electric hybrid system that offers additional automatic features. It consists of solar panels, a battery bank, a Xantrex SW Plus Inverter/Charger, a charge controller that manages battery charging, and a generator.

When the sun is up, the solar panels generate power to charge batteries and provide electricity. At night, the Xantrex inverter/charger automatically runs your electrical equipment from your battery bank. The generator provides additional back-up battery charging capability for extended periods of cloudy weather. The Xantrex inverter/charger can automatically start the generator and initiate a recharge cycle when the battery bank is depleted, or a load is too large for the batteries to support independently. You can even have a connection to the grid should you want to use utility power.

The R Powr panel is a fully integrated power conversion center. The core of the panel consists of one or two Outback FX2000 inverters. On either side of the inverter(s) are the roomy Outback AC and DC power centers with appropriate input, output, and bypass breaker assemblies. All components are pre-wired and mounted on the robust, powder-coated Outback Mounting Plate, with plenty of mounting holes for an easy on-site installation. R Powr assemblies are ETL listed and custom-built for each customer. R Powr panels are fully wired, and require a minimum of installation time and small parts on-site. They can be used for grid-tied or stand-alone systems, providing a smooth installation with a minimum of parts-run interruptions. The DC box has ample room for additional breakers, such as the Ground Fault Protector required for residential-mounted PV arrays, or for DC loads, and DC charging equipment such as a wind turbine or a future PV expansion. The AC box is also sized large enough to handle additional breakers. R Powr panels include the incredibly useful Mate, and the Hub that lets the brainy Mate communicate with all the inverters and charge controls (and your PC too if desired). Samlex Pure Sine Wave Inverters
Just the thing for smaller off-the-grid homes, these mid-sized 600 and 1000 watt inverters deliver clean sine wave power at an affordable price. Available in either 12v or 24v input, these compact lightweight units feature overload protection, thermostatic fan, low battery alarm, warning lights, on/off switch and automatic shutdown. Output is a pair of 3-prong plugs on front, input is #2 gauge terminals on back.

The 600w unit will surge to 1000 watts, is 13.2" x 9.3" x 3.3", weighs 6.6 lbs.

Xantrex SW Plus Series Inverters
New choices and lower prices for off-grid sine wave power. Xantrex has intro¬duced a new and improved version of its sine wave inverter technology. Available in 24- or 48-volt versions, the SWP-series offers continuous AC power output at 2.5, 4.0 and 5.5 kVA. This highly capable inverter can be used for independent households or to provide automatic backup power when utility power fails. Peak efficiency is 95, and search mode power is under 2 watts! Want a little more from your PS? With the optional LCD control panel you can change the basic programming just like on the SW-series, make changes to the standard battery charging parameters, or most of the other features of the SW-series.

SMA Sunny Boy Inverter Power Line Carrier Module
SMA is a high-quality German manufacturer that has been making photovoltaic-powered utility intertie inverters since 1985. SMA has put more than 50,000 units into intertie service, primarily in the green German and European markets. The direct-intertie Sunny Boy series is their third-generation design. A basic grid-tie system, as shown on the right, is comprised of of solar cells and a grid-tie inverter (this one being made by Xantrex). Solar cells take the Sun's energy and turn it into DC electricity. The inverter turns the DC electricity generated by the solar cells into utility grade AC power for use in your home or business.

Sharp 3500 Sunvista Inverter
The Sharp intertie inverter has proven itself over several years and tens of thousands of Japanese installations. We're pleased to introduce it to North America. Offering up to 3,500 watts of output, with maximum power point tracking, the Sharp is unique in that it uses three separate input channels. Each channel operates independently, making the most of the array attached to that particular input. PV arrays can face different directions, with different numbers or even brands or sizes of PV modules to make the best use of available space, and it will still harvest maximum output from each module. All modules within a single input channel must match, and all must face the same direction. This inverter also lends itself to starting with a smaller system with lots of room for future expansion.
