About the Author JAMES M. GIFFIN, M.D. received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in 1961. He is the co-author of the Complete Great Pyrenees, The Dog Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook, and The Cat Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook-published by Howell Book House. Dr. Giffin's interest in horses began with his daughter's Kate's first horse, and continued through 4-H and the various horse shows in western United States. While practicing surgery in Colorado, he was called to active military duty in Operation Desert Storm, subsequently retiring as a lieutenant colonel. He now devotes his time to writing. TOM GORE, D.V.M. is a veterinarian with over twenty-five years experience in caring for horses. He grew up on a cattle ranch and counts among his earliest recollections the names of the horses he rode on seasonal roundups. Dr. Gore received his medical degree from Colorado State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1973. He returned to his hometown and established a private practice in veterinary medicine. He and his family, with their dogs and horses, now make their home in Osmond, Nebraska.
A Serious Equine Health Care Reference -- As a first-horse owner, this text was a whole lot more than I needed or wanted to know. For the horse owner who is serious about learning as much as possible about health care problems and how to treat these problems themselves, the book is a winner and probably unique. However, for someone who likes to rely on his/her vet for anything more than the usual maintenance procedures (deworming, treating minor cuts, etc.) and doesn't foresee giving his/her horse injections and the like or treating fairly serious illnesses, a less complete book would be sufficient and much less daunting. Probably an excellent reference for students of equine health and for those who would like to become vets themselves one day.
Detailed information -- I find this to be the most detailed veterinary guide, short of buying a veterinary encyclopedia. Of the several I own, most are very general and have a lot of "ask you veterinarian for a course of action." This one tells you the most common treatments so you know what to expect. I go back to my dog-eared copy all the time. As I back-yard breeder, I like Giffin's veterinary breeder's guide, too.
This book has helped my grades in all my horse classes. -- Great book!! four hooves way up.. I have a equine science classes and I use this book for research and just to help me better understand the problems and cures for horse problems... Its like a horse vet bible.. easy to read with great pictures.. Very good book to add to any horse collection! -- This is a good book to keep handy. Has the quick reference for those emergencies and the little things that you just need to watch for.
